Further Information

What causes discolouration of the teeth?

It’s not uncommon for our teeth to lose their natural white colour over time. As we age the outer layer of the teeth known as the enamel gets thinner. This results in our teeth begin to appear a more yellowish, darker colour. Genetics, medication, and injury can also contribute to discolouration. However, our lifestyle choices are the biggest cause of the teeth losing their whiteness.

To restore the teeth to their natural colour, whitening is an extremely effective treatment option. This will, however, depend on how badly your teeth are stained, and whether the discolouration is extrinsic or intrinsic.

Extrinsic stains

Extrinsic stains appear on the enamel, the outer surface of the tooth. Extrinsic stains are often caused by lifestyle choices such as the food and drink we consume, as well as the use of tobacco. Chromophores found in foods such as coffee, tea, cola, and wine are what cause discolouration.

In most cases, these stains are not too difficult to fix, however regular brushing is unlikely to rectify the problem. The best, and most effective, way to treat extrinsic stains is with professional dental bleaching. Not only can the treatment minimise stains and restore your teeth to their natural white colour but can improve their brightness up to eight shades.

Intrinsic stains

Intrinsic stains occur much deeper within the tooth structure. Staining develops within the inner layer of the teeth known as the dentin and is much more permanent. Commonly the result of injury or exposure to too much fluoride and tetracycline antibiotics during the early stages of the teeth’s development.

Intrinsic stains are less responsive to professional dental bleaching and usually benefit from long term teeth whitening treatment. For severe cases of tooth discolouration, veneers and direct resin bonding are commonly used to treat a patient’s cosmetic complaint.

What is Boutique Whitening?

Manufactured in the USA, Boutique Whitening is the teeth whitening gel and home kit we use at Revitalise to help brighten your smile. We have tried and tested this product to ensure it offers the desired results at a competitive price. Boutique has created a product that not only provides real results within a week of starting treatment, but one that allows you to achieve these results from the comfort of your own home.

Treatment usually involves wearing your custom-made trays for around 2 hours each day. However, many people prefer to wear them as they sleep for the sake of convenience. Fortunately, with Boutique Whitening we can find the solution that works best for you.

Boutique by Day

For patients who need a fast yet comfortable treatment solution, Boutique by Day is the solution for you. Designed to whiten the teeth by releasing large quantities of oxygen free radicals, you will only be required to wear your trays for around 2 hours each day.

Boutique by Night

For those who prefer to have their day uninterrupted, Boutique by Night has been specifically designed to treat patients as they sleep. The custom trays will be worn for four hours during sleep and release oxygen free radicals to whiten the teeth at a much slower rate.

Which product is right for me?

Both Boutique by Day and Boutique by Night offer extraordinary results and are completely safe to use. Consider your lifestyle and personal preference as to which option works best for you.

What to expect throughout your treatment

Teeth whitening is a non-invasive form of cosmetic dentistry. This means we do not need to alter the teeth in any way, there is no drilling or filing involved throughout the treatment. The whole process can take up to 6 weeks to complete but will only involve 3 short sessions at our dental centre.

Session 1

It’s important before we begin any form of treatment to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy. In our first session, we will fully assess your overall oral health to ensure there are no underlying dental problems which might hinder treatment. In the case of cavities or active gum disease, it is not advisable to continue treatment. If you have sensitive teeth it is worth mentioning this to us during your first session, as teeth whitening might make your symptoms worse.

Once we have determined teeth whitening is possible and safe, we can proceed with the treatment. During your first session, we will begin by giving your teeth a deep clean to remove any build-up and debris. Next, we will take impressions of your teeth for custom whitening trays to be made. This results in a product individually fitted to you, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit throughout treatment.

Session 2

We will provide you with your home whitening kit consisting of your custom trays and whitening gel used to bleach your teeth. You will be provided with instructions on how to use the home kit and a demonstration if necessary.

You will then be required to wear your custom trays every day for the next 2 to 6 weeks. Most people will need to wear them for around 2 hours during the day, however, some people prefer to wear them at night during sleep for convenience.

Session 3

Our third and final session will be to review your treatment and ensure you are happy with the outcome. If your teeth are not as white as you hoped, we can discuss further treatment options to get you the smile you want.

Revitalise procedures and treatments are bespoke and tailored to your needs and lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, teeth whitening is completely safe when carried out by a registered dentist. The treatment will not harm your teeth in any way or cause damage to the tooth’s enamel.

There is also no worry of the chemical leaking, causing chemical burns or accidental swallowing. At Revitalise we make custom trays specifically based on the structure of your mouth and teeth, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit throughout treatment.

Is teeth whitening permanent?

No, teeth whitening isn’t permanent to fix discolouration of the teeth. However, it does offer a long-term solution that can easily be maintained with good oral hygiene and regular upkeep.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

No, the treatment is completely drill-free, and the teeth do not need to be altered in any way. After the treatment, it is common to feel slight sensitivity which normally clears up within a few days.

How much does teeth whitening cost in the UK?

Our treatment starts at £500.

Who can do teeth whitening?

DIY home kits can be purchased online and on the high street, however, they are less effective and can carry risks. For the most effective treatment and avoiding any nasty, irreversible damage to your teeth and mouth, its best to visit a dentist registered with the General Dental Council.

Can I have my teeth whitened if I have crowns?

Yes, however, the crown will remain the same colour as it was when placed. This is because the whitening gel will not affect the crown. However, it is possible to closely match the shade of your teeth to a crown.

Can anyone get their teeth whitened?

If there are no underlying dental problems, most people will be able to have their teeth whitened and see the benefits. For people who have cavities and active gum disease, we will need to treat these first. Teeth whitening is not recommended for patients with chronic sensitivity, badly worn teeth or those being treated for oral cancer.

How long does teeth whitening take?

Professional teeth whitening typically takes around 2 to 6 weeks to achieve the desired results. You will begin to notice these changes within the first week of treatment. But it is important to wear your custom whitening trays daily for your prescribed period.

What our Clients say

“The minute I met Martin, I just knew he was so calm and relaxing. So then we had a discussion and Martin said what he could do and it had to be what our pocket could afford as well and we went ahead with it. The experience I had at this dentist was unbelievable, it was a journey I loved every minute of.”

Client: Dee
Treatment: Dental Implants

“There’s always smiling, handshakes, hugs and plenty of tea and coffee. They looked after my husband who was there for the day. They do the sedation and Hayley looked after me. Obviously I was unaware of exactly what they were doing, but they always make you feel so comfortable. Although you’re nervous, I don’t think I could’ve gone and got the same treatment anywhere else.”
