Further Information

What is Six Month Smiles® orthodontic treatment?

Developed in the USA using contemporary techniques, Six Month Smiles® is a modern form of orthodontic treatment. Six Month Smiles® uses proven techniques found in traditional orthodontics, however, the treatment time is drastically reduced. What would normally take 2-3 years to fix a patient’s cosmetic complaint can be achieved in 4-9 months.

If you are put off by the idea of wearing a conventional metal brace or aligner but want straighter teeth, STO could be the solution for you. If you have been told by your dentist in Plymouth orthodontics is not the right treatment option for you due to your age, book in for a consultation with us today to discuss our bespoke orthodontic treatment designed specifically for adults.

Why does Six Month Smiles® work faster than traditional orthodontics?

Short term orthodontics main focus is on fixing a patient’s cosmetic complaint, whereas traditional methods also focus on correcting problems with a person bite. STO will focus on the front teeth the ones visible when you smile and talk.

Traditional orthodontics can be split into two phases, STO will only focus on the first one. In the first phase of treatment, the aim is to de-rotate, level and align the teeth which are not in their correct position. The second phase of treatment would look at specific tooth relationships, specifically the back ones, adjusting them to ensure they match up with current standards of orthodontics.

A common misconception with Short term orthodontics is we use excessive pressure and force to move the teeth into their correct position. However, this is not true. Just like traditional treatment braces are used to gently push and move the teeth into a more natural position.

What to expect throughout your orthodontic treatment

All of our treatment for our private patients will begin with a consultation. Once you have had this and decided Six Month Smiles® is the right treatment option for you, we will proceed with transforming your smile. Our first stage of treatment is to book you in for an appointment with our experienced orthodontic dental team. During this appointment, we will take a digital 3D scan of your teeth along with photos to assess the position of your teeth. This is then sent to the Six Month Smiles® team who we work closely with to create your bespoke plan.

Once we have your treatment plan in place we will meet with you again to discuss any concerns or questions you may have regarding the treatment. Six Month Smiles® we also provide us with a bespoke digital animation showing how your teeth will gently move throughout the next six months.

The next stage will be to place your brace, ensuring it fits correctly and is comfortable. Over the next 6 months, your teeth will gently be pushed into their correct position. Correcting crowded, spaced and overlapping teeth, as well as ones that are misaligned.

For a successful treatment, you will be required to come in every four weeks to have your brace adjusted, the same as you would with traditional orthodontics. If you are travelling from Plymouth for Orthodontic treatment you will still be able to drive and travel alone after your adjustments have been made.

After your brace is ready to be removed, you will be required to wear a retainer for a short time to ensure your teeth maintain their new straight position.

Short term orthodontic treatment for those with crowded teeth

If you have been told in the past by your dentist in Plymouth orthodontic treatment isn’t possible due to crowded teeth we can perform an additional procedure to make it possible. This is achieved by filing the teeth to provide more space to fit a brace.

The process is known as ‘interproximal reduction’ and is a completely safe and harmless procedure. We will remove a very thin layer of the tooth’s outer surface, known as the enamel. This is achieved by passing a coarse strip through the teeth, allowing them to move. At Revitalise we prefer to avoid filing whenever possible, however, if it is necessary for successful treatment your teeth will function normally and remain healthy.

Your Consultation

Full Dental Check

We must ensure your mouth, teeth and gums are healthy before we start any treatment. For this reason, you will require a full dental health check so we can assess your unique situation. We will ask how your general health is, examine your teeth, gums and mouth, and carry out any x-rays if necessary. If you are travelling from Plymouth for Orthodontics you could request from your current dentist access to your dental records, so we have a full history of your previous dental care.

Finance And Cost Options

We know that the cost of private dental treatment can be a burden, that’s why we offer a range of patient finance options to help spread the cost of your orthodontic treatment. Here at Revitalise, we believe everyone should have the beautiful smile they deserve and the price tag should not stop you from achieving this.

What are the benefits of short term orthodontics?

Short Term Orthodontics will provide you with a smile you are confident and happy with when smiling, laughing and speaking. However, multiple other health benefits come with STO compared to other dental treatment options.

Improved oral hygiene – When your teeth are crooked or crowded keeping them clean and free from plaque build-up is more difficult. Increasing your chances of developing tooth decay, infection and gum disease. This is because it’s difficult to brush and floss in between the gaps.

Fast – Traditional orthodontics usually takes 2-3 years to complete, with Six Month Smiles® and STO we can significantly reduce treatment time. Tooth misalignments can be corrected within six months, sometimes less.

Affordable – The initial cost might seem daunting, but short term orthodontics will provide you with a long-lasting smile. If you are looking for a dentist providing orthodontics near Plymouth that offers payment plans, look no further. We have a range of payment plans making treatment more affordable and to best suit your lifestyle and needs.

Revitalise procedures and treatments are bespoke and tailored to your needs and lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does short term orthodontics really only take 6 months to complete?

The average completion time for short term orthodontic treatment is 6 months. Treatment can be completed quicker or sometimes take a little longer. The length of treatment will vary from patient to patient. You can expect treatment to range between 4-9 months.

Do short term orthodontics hurt?

No, you will not experience any pain throughout your treatment. Our braces make use of wires which are very light resulting in no heavy force or pressure being used to move the teeth.

It’s common to experience some mild discomfort during the fitting appointment and a few days after the brace has been placed.

Will I need to have my teeth filed?

We will only file a patient’s teeth when it is necessary to ensure treatment is successful. When the teeth are overcrowded, removing a very thin layer of the tooth’s enamel might be required. This is completely safe and will not affect the normal functioning of the teeth. You might have been turned down for orthodontics in Plymouth for this reason, if so book if for a consultation with us so we can find a solution that works for you.

Will short term orthodontics damage my teeth?

There are no risks of root damage or other issues that might occur that differ from traditional orthodontics. Because we use lighter braces than those associated with traditional, there is no increased risk of damage to your teeth.

Can anyone have short term orthodontics?

At Revitalise we only offer STO to patients over the age of 18. Your oral and general health must be in good standing to proceed with treatment.

For this reason, we will require a full dental health check to ensure your mouth, gums and teeth are healthy. For patients travelling from Plymouth for orthodontic treatment, you can request from your current or previous dentist access to your dental records. This allows us to gain a full look at your dental health records.

Will I have a mouth full metal?

No. We understand that having a metal brace, sometimes referred to as ‘train tracks’, can be embarrassing. If you are looking for a dentist providing discreet orthodontics in Plymouth we can help. The brace we will use is clear and discreet. The wires are tooth coloured and the brackets are clear, even from close up they are hard to notice.

Will I be required to wear a retainer?

Yes, it’s important during the early stages of your brace being removed a retainer is worn to maintain the new, straight positioning of the teeth. This is common among all orthodontic treatment and will only be short term.

How much will short term orthodontics cost?

Most treatments that fix cosmetic concerns are bespoke, meaning the price will vary with each clinical situation. You can expect treatment to start around £3,500.

When might I need short-term orthodontic treatment?

For anyone aged 18 or over, concerned with the way their teeth look orthodontic treatment can be a great solution.

Teeth concerns that might be suitable for this type of treatment usually include:

  • Teeth that have spaces between them
  • Teeth that stick out
  • Teeth that are pushed back
  • Crooked or crowded teeth that are not aesthetic
  • Crooked or crowded teeth that are hard to clean

Are short term orthodontic braces less comfortable than traditional braces?

No, they are often said to be more comfortable due to the pressure of the brace not being as forceful. A common misconception with short term orthodontics is that more pressure is applied to get the job done quicker.

What our Clients say

Marion visited Revitalise to reclaim her smile with a complete implant treatment. In this video, she explains how the staff at the practice put her at ease and why she recommends Revitalise to everyone she meets.

Client: Marion
Treatment: Complete mouth secured with implants

“The minute I met Martin, I just knew he was so calm and relaxing. So then we had a discussion and Martin said what he could do and it had to be what our pocket could afford as well and we went ahead with it. The experience I had at this dentist was unbelievable, it was a journey I loved every minute of.”

Client: Dee
Treatment: Dental Implants

“There’s always smiling, handshakes, hugs and plenty of tea and coffee. They looked after my husband who was there for the day. They do the sedation and Hayley looked after me. Obviously I was unaware of exactly what they were doing, but they always make you feel so comfortable. Although you’re nervous, I don’t think I could’ve gone and got the same treatment anywhere else.”
